No Quarter- Tanya Huff: I fitting conclusion to events from the first three books. I especially liked that the characters from the first book and the ones from the second book met up and I liked how everything concluded.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban- J. K. Rowling: I'm listening to these as audio books with my SO who hasn't read/listened to them before. I like the earlier books for their brevity and tighter editing.

Cast in Courtlight- Michelle Sagara: This series is so much fun. I love Kaylin and her friends and allies. I can't wait to read book three, which I've put on reserve at the library.

Mystic and Rider, The Thirteenth House, Dark Moon Defender, and When Winter Comes (novella in The Queen in Winter) - Sharon Shinn: I loved this series so much that I read the whole thing in one month. I can't wait for Reader and Raelynx! I plan to read the rest of my Shinn TBR pile this year.

The Forest of App- Gloria Rand Dank: Simplistic YA fantasy which really didn't go anywhere, although I liked the senile snake.

A Gift of Wings- Sarah Monette: another story in The Queen in Winter. I liked this so much that I plan to read her novels now. The other two novellas in the anthology aren't even worth mentioning because I hated them both.

The Fire Opal- Catherine Asaro: This was okay. It's pretty much a standard Asaro Luna. I liked the small twist of the hero's identity.

The Mystic and Rider series is my favorite of Sharon Shinn's work. Something about them just pulls you in, and none of the characters inspire homicide. Which reminds me, I should start looking for copies to purchase!

Also, I've realised that somehow, Asaro's writing style makes much better sf reading than fantasy. The same straightforwardness feels more contrived in her Aronsdale, etc. settings, though the concepts are still interesting.

My favorite by Shinn remains Summers at Castle Auburn, but I've loved everything by her that I've read since that book (the first two books I read of hers were The Shape-Changer's Wife, which I didn't like and Archangel, in which, as you said above, Rachel nearly inspired homicide for me).

I think Asaro's fantasy world is too similar to the Skolian Universe in the descriptions of people's looks and how rooms are decorated, but I've been less than impressed with her female characters in her Lunas. I love the shape magic though.
